Sloth Bear Kills Couple, Feasts for Hours

A sloth bear in India murdered a man and woman and feasted for hours.

Sunday's incident happened as the pair went back from a shrine in a natural reserve, officials said.

Mukesh Rai, 43, and his wife Gudiya, 39, were heading home from Khermai temple when they spotted a sloth bear in Panna, Madhya Pradesh.

The Times of India reports that the bear "ripped their corpses apart" and devoured their carcasses for four hours before police and forest officials arrived.

In India, bear assaults are infrequent but more common in forests. In 2015, researchers reviewed assaults in Central India and found most victims had facial or scalp injuries.

Divisional Forest Officer Gaurav Sharma told DNA India, "We aim to move the animal to another zoo."
