Newsom launches gun violence prevention initiative

On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, Governor Gavin Newsom launched a community-based outreach effort to advocate "red flag" Gun Violence Restraining Orders.

Too many Americans live in terror because of inactivity, Governor Newsom stated. In California, we're implementing common-sense gun safety measures to keep people safe.

Red flag laws remove weapons and ammunition from those who may hurt themselves or others. They let loved ones or law police to prevent someone in distress from getting guns.

From 2016 through 2020, California granted 3,007 GVROs. 2020 saw 1,284 restraining orders, 15 times more than 2016's 85.

This $11 million, 18-month programme will educate communities at risk for gun violence about California's red flag legislation.

California Governor Newsom presented a fact sheet on gun safety yesterday. The governor commended President Biden for his efforts on gun safety and urged Congress to adopt gun safety legislation.
