10-second one-leg stand may predict lifespan

New research reveals that your capacity to do so may predict whether you'll die in the following decade.

An multinational team of experts recommends all middle-aged and older persons should take the 10-second exam.

"[It] gives immediate and objective feedback for the patient and health providers on static balance," the researchers added.

Balance, unlike cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility, tends to be kept into a person's 60s. It quickly declines.

The researchers analysed data from the 1994 CLINIMEX Exercise study to investigate relationships between poor health, mortality, physical fitness, exercise, and heart disease risks.

Between February 2009 and December 2020, researchers examined 1,700 white Brazilians (ages 51 to 75).
